Introduction

India has a long and rich history of minting coins. For thousands of years different dynasties have ruled some or all the parts of the Indian subcontinent. Many of these kingdoms minted coins reflected their rulers and the way of life at the time. As such, Old Indian coins are an important part of our history and offer us a glimpse into the ways our ancestors lived.

This is our guide on how you can sell your coins in a way that you will receive the most money for your coins.

Knowing what you have

Let’s start with a brief history of coinage in India categorized by era. Note we are only including old coins:

Chola Empire Coins

The Chola Dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in the history of mankind. They ruled from approximately 34 Century BCE to 1279 CE.

The Chola’s excelled in foreign trade and maritime activity. Their coins have been found in China and Sri Lanka. They are extremely rare coins and are valued for their historic significance.

The Chola rulers issued their coins in gold, silver and copper.

Their prices range from 50 British Pounds to 400 pound depending on quality.

Kushan Dynasty Coins

The Kushan was a syncretic empire formed by the Yuezhi in the Bactian territoes in the early 1st Century. It spread to encompass much of Afghanistan and the northern Part of the Indian Subcontinent.

There was a lot of coinage in this period. The earliest coins were minted by Heraios the first Kushan King. They are notable for having Greek alphabet letters on them. These coins follow the same style of coinage as the greeks of having the king’s face emblazoned on them.

Later kings minted coins to pay homage to different Hindu gods as well as Iranian deities and in honour of their lineage.

These coins remain rare and of high value. With prices ranging from 150 to 5000 pounds.

Gupta Dynasty Coins

Was an ancient Indian empire existing from mid-to late 3rd Century CE to 543 CE. This period is known as the golden age of India by historians.

Most of their coins are found in present-day eastern Uttar Pradesh. Gupta coins are unique in that they were no artistic depiction of monarchs on the coins. The Gupta coins can be grouped in 6 categories: Samudragupta, Ramagupta, ChandraguptaII, Kumaragupta, Skandagupta, Post-Gupta Lead Coins.

Ujjain coins

Ujjain coins were minted in Avanti, in ancient western Malwa. The coins began being issued shortly after 200 BC. They were minted from Mauryan Silver and Copper. Depictions of the coins were influenced by religious motifs.

There are two ways of selling your coins: selling them by yourself or having someone else sell them for you. We will get into the pros and cons of each and how to go about selling them.

Before we get into how to sell you need to know what kind of coins you have and their value.

Selling Coins Yourself

Deciding whether or not to sell your coins yourself

Depending on the quality and quantity of the coins you have, coin selling may be a time consuming and stressful process.

From grading your coins, to finding an appropriate channels to sell them, to taking great pictures and writing the best descriptions to pique the interest of collectors.

One can sell coins at coins shows, online or at an auction or through a dealer on consignment.

Considerations to make

Time. Time is of the essence, no one has enough of it and it should not be wasted. If you plan on buying and selling rare coins for a profit selling your coins as fast as possible for you to be able to buy and sell other coins at a profit is important. The faster the turn around the more money you make.

Unless, of course, you found a coin so rare that the value of the coin will keep going up year-on-year.

A professional coin dealer travels to coin shows, have contacts in the industry and you can leverage their knowledge and contacts to save you time. They can alos give you a realistic time-frame on how long it will take to sell your coins.

Motivation and passion. Sometimes things may not go your way. Sells maybe slow. The offers you are getting are below what you paid for you precious coins. Do you have the patience to wait a long days, weeks, months or years before you make a sell?

Professional dealers understand this and have gone through the process before. Using them is basically outsourcing the stress to them.

Market Access. Today it is easier to access the market online. Buyers and sellers are available. But in instances in which you have a very good coin collection and believe you will not get fair value online. Using a well-connected professional dealer is worth the commission you will pay them.

Selling Coins at an Auction

Selling at Auction depends on the kind of collection of coins you have. Some coins and/or coin collection will sell well at auctions because they are rare and in good condition.

Having your coins graded and avid collectors will pay top Rupee for the coins.

Auctions are advantageous because you will get good value for your coin(s). however, they are also time consuming and it can take up to a four  months for you to sell you coins.

If you are happy with the terms and considitions that the auction house offer you, go ahead and sign the contract and hope there record bids on your coins.
